(reported by Huang Cong) Recently, cotton genetics research team in HZAU published an article titled Population structure and genetic basis of the agronomic traits of upland cotton in China revealed by a genome-wide association study using high-density SNPs on international academic Plant Biotechnology Journal . The first author is Doctor Huang Cong from cotton team and professor Zhang Xianlong and professor Lin Zhongxu are the co-corresponding authors. The article thoroughly reveals chinese upland cotton’s hereditary basis of the important agronomic and quality traits , and the genetic structure of germ plasm resource, which has great importance in going further research on cotton genetics and in guiding the cotton breeding improved.

The research had an extensive collection of 503 domestic upland cotton cultivars and made genotyping for 63k Cotton chip with its corresponding high density genetic map. The research found that upland cotton group can be distinctly divided into 3 subgroups, and the dividing of subgroups doesn’t have direct relationships with the geographical source and variety breeding period. Combining with the phenotypic data of 2 years of 4 areas of 8 environments, the team made the genome-wide associated analysis of 16 cotton agronomic traits like flowering, yield, fiber quality and so on. They have detected 160 associated QTL and 158 candidate ranges, and also found a candidate geneGh_D08G2376related to fiber yield. Among 25 candidate ranges, they found 19 associated cotton functional genes which have been reported. By the analysis of tissue expression, they found 336 tissue specific genes in 86 candidate ranges. These results offer vital reference basis for the subsequent gene excavation and function research. Additionally, the research found that QTL can control multiple trait groups. The article uses a network diagram clearly shows the relation between the traits, and the pleiotropic of QTL.
